2007 Race Results View from the Peloton – Eaglecrest Road Race 5/4/07 By Janice Sheufelt Fourteen intrepid racers competed in the first Freewheelers road race of the season. After warming up as best we could in the cold temperature, thirteen of us rolled up to the start area near the Douglas traffic circle. Just as we were about to start, we spotted Chris Scholes’ car crossing the bridge. We waited for Chris to join us, becoming more hypothermic each minute. Finally Chris was on his bike, and the race started with an all-out attack from Tracy Rivera and John Bursell – it was quite a blistering start to the first road race of the year. After the race settled down for a bit, Dale McFarland rolled off the front of the pack, with Chris Scholes joining him; the two were off the front but not out of view, for a good portion of the race. The entire field then regrouped just as we reached the turn up to Eaglecrest. John Bursell easily out-climbed the rest of the field on the five mile climb up Eaglecrest, with a commanding 43 second gap to second place Dale McFarland. We’re all glad that Dale is now racing on the road in addition to mountain bike racing. Tracy Rivera, who is training for an Ironman triathlon, took third while Chris Scholes faded to fourth. John Bilderbeck and Rob Welton showed good early season form, while Janice Sheufelt and Terry Ward sprinted for 7 th place. Dave Walker and Charlie Williams rode strong, while Nathan Adams had to lay down on the pavement part way up Eaglecrest due to calf cramps but still managed to finish the race. Great job to the three sports division riders, Eric Olsen, Mike Baxter and Scott Yarnall. Thanks to all the people who helped with the race – Casey Colton, Jim Sheufelt, Tara Jeans, and Dennis Weston.
